Announcements

  • AB 1947.
    • VABANC submitted a letter of support of Assemblymember’s Phil Ting hate crimes bill that was sponsored by Cal-APABA, the Asian Law Alliance, and other advocacy groups.  The Assembly Public Safety Committee passed AB 1947 unanimously, with the amendments removing the FBI and anti-journalist-crime provisions. The bill will require every law enforcement agency adopt a hate crimes policy with detailed, specific protocols to that every officer in the state will be required to follow.  We believe that this would urge consistency among all state and local law enforcement agencies and increase data collection and reporting of hate crimes, as they are underreported and difficult to prosecute without accompanying hate speech from accused.
  • President Thuy Thi Nguyen of Foothill Community College.
    • VABANC submitted a letter in support of President Nguyen, who was hired to be the First Vietnamese Woman President of a community college in 2016.  President Nguyen was a part of the inception of VABANC and has been a leader in our community. She has been awarded VABANC’s trailblazer award in 2011 and has been a keynote speaker for our scholarship dinners. She has always been an advocate for our legal community, a supportive member of VABANC, and continuing to move the legal needle and paving the path for younger attorneys.

  • VABANC Shows Our Support for the 46th Annual AABA Gala (Wednesday, March 30, 2022, 6:00pm)
    • The 46th annual AABA Gala kicked off with a beautiful performance by the Oakland Youth Chorus.  In her introductory address, President Lisa Mak challenged the audience to “speak up in unity” against the crisis of hate and for the movement toward change. Honoree presentations followed, where distinguished guests both received and presented awards.  Michael GW Lee received the Dale Minami Impact Award for his tireless efforts in promoting diversity on bench.  The General Counsel Legacy Award, presented by the Hon. Edward Chen, was awarded to founding member of NAPABA, Hoyt Zia.  Recent judicial appointee to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Hon. Lucy Koh, received the AABA Trailblazer Award for her groundbreaking contributions, evenhandedness, and integrity – “She is a first who puts herself last.”  The evening concluded with a thought-provoking fireside chat between President Mak and entrepreneur Michelle MiJung Kim, author of The Wake Up.  Kim dared us to “pull at the thread to unravel the tapestry of oppression,” and offered sage advice from a fortune cookie – “Don’t give in to cynicism.”
