Every first Wednesday evening of the month, VABANC Legal Clinic is hosted from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Vietnamese American Service Center (2410 Senter Rd., San Jose, CA 95111), fully operated by volunteer availability. Our next clinic is on Wednesday, February 5th, 2025. There will be no clinics in December 2024 and January 2025.

In collaboration with the Vietnamese American Service Center (VASC), VABANC invites attorneys and law students to volunteer at our legal clinics. Since 2016, our dedicated VABANC volunteers have been the backbone of our mission. As we recover from the pandemic, the San Jose Vietnamese community needs your support more than ever.

We are particularly seeking volunteer attorneys with experience in housing, immigration, employment, and family law.

Non-attorneys, law students, and community members are also welcome to volunteer and engage directly with clients through intake consultations or Vietnamese translation assistance. Your support can make a significant difference!

The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara is pleased to announce that a session of Bench Conduct and Demeanor for Temporary Judges will be offered on December 6, 2024, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm. Judge Sunil Kulkarni and Judge Lori Pegg will serve as the instructors for this live remote class.

The course is open to members of the State Bar who serve as or intend to apply to serve as a court-appointed temporary judge. This course has been approved to provide three hours of MCLE credit, including .50 credit for ethics and .50 for elimination of bias. Please note that video and audio capabilities are required to participate in this interactive class.

Code Tenderloin is launching a special toy drive to bring joy to the lives of 5,000 children in need later this year, at their annual Joy to the City 2024 in Chase Arena with the Warriors holiday event. They want to ensure every child receives a gift that will brighten their day. They are kindly asking for donations of new, unwrapped toys to make this possible. Your generosity will make a significant impact and bring smiles to so many children and families throughout the Bay Area.

Code Tenderloin provides a wide range of services to the San Francisco community, with a focus on job readiness training, employment support, and tech skills development. They serve low-income immigrants and communities of color, offering food delivery, outreach to youth, families, and seniors. Through their holistic approach, Code Tenderloin is dedicated to empowering individuals to secure sustainable employment and create brighter futures for themselves.

ABOUT JOY TO THE CITY 2024

Joy to the City brought smiles to many children who may not otherwise receive holiday gifts. The upcoming second annual Joy to the City follows last year’s successful event that engaged the San Francisco community. In 2023, they welcomed over 5000 attendees and distributed 4000+ toys, books, clothes, 850 grocery bags, 500 turkeys, and over 500 free meals. This year’s holiday celebration will feature more toy and book giveaways, photos with Santa, fun crafts, music performances, DJs, and children’s entertainment.

This year, they are aiming to make an even bigger impact, and they need your help to achieve their goal.

AABA/APILO Pro-Bono Legal Clinic
The AABA Community Services Committee and Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (APILO) operate a pro bono legal clinic that is staffed by volunteer attorneys and law students. The clinic helps ensure that low-income Bay Area residents, including many mono-lingual immigrants, will receive free legal information and advice from AABA volunteers. The APILO/AABA Clinic assists individuals in a number of areas, including immigration and family law issues. The APILO/AABA Clinics are now held virtually via Zoom, and they occur every third Wednesday of the month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering at the clinic, please sign up for our clinic mailing list via this link. VABANC congratulates now-Judge Han Tran for being appointed as a judge in the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda.

Judge Tran has served as a Senior Deputy City Attorney at the Oakland City Attorney’s Office since 2020. He was a Sole Practitioner from 2007 to 2020. Tran was a Deputy District Attorney at the Solano County District Attorney’s Office from 2003 to 2006 and an Associate at Latham & Watkins LLP from 2000 to 2003. Tran was an Associate at McCutchen, Doyle, Brown & Enersen from 1996 to 2000. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

The AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP) provides free and low-cost legal services to people with HIV/AIDS in the San Francisco Bay Area. The AABA Community Services Committee and Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (APILO) operate a pro bono legal clinic that is staffed by volunteer attorneys and law students. The clinic helps ensure that low-income Bay Area residents, including many mono-lingual immigrants, will receive free legal information and advice from AABA volunteers. The APILO/AABA Clinic assists individuals in a number of areas, including immigration and family law issues. The APILO/AABA Clinics are now held virtually via Zoom, and they occur every third Wednesday of the month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering at the clinic, please sign up for our clinic mailing list via this link. The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara will host a live session of Bench Conduct and Demeanor for Temporary Judges. The course is open to members of the State Bar who serve as or intend to apply to serve as a court-appointed temporary judge. This course will be taught by Judge Sunil Kulkarni and Judge Lori Pegg, and held via Zoom.

VABANC congratulates now-Judge Danny Lam Nguyen for being appointed as a judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Judge Nguyen is the first Vietnamese judge on the DC Superior Court bench.

Prior to his appointment, Judge Nguyen was an Associate General Counsel at Booz Allen Hamilton, a trial attorney in the Criminal Division of the United States Department of Justice, where he prosecuted complex financial fraud crimes, and an assistant United States attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, where he prosecuted cases involving domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Nguyen served as a law clerk to Judge Reggie Walton of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. He is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center and University of California, Los Angeles.
